On the Feasibility of a Stop NLSP in Gravitino Dark Matter Scenarios

We analyze the possibility that the lighter stop {\tilde t_1} could be the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) in models where the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). We do not find any possibility for a stop NLSP in the constrained MSSM with universal input soft supersymmetry-breaking masses at the GUT scale (CMSSM), but do find small allowed regions in models with non-universal Higgs masses (NUHM). We discuss the cosmological evolution of stop hadrons. Most {\tilde t_1}qq `sbaryons' and the corresponding `antisbaryons' annihilate with conventional antibaryons and baryons into {\tilde t_1}{\bar q} `mesinos' and the corresponding `antimesinos', respectively, shortly after the quark-hadron transition in the early Universe, and most mesinos and antimesinos subsequently annihilate. As a result, insufficient metastable charged stop hadrons survive to alter Big Bang nucleosynthesis.Comment: 31 pages, 14 figure

This paper was presented at the Architectural Research Centers Consortium conference, FUTURE of Architectural Research, May 6-9, 2015.Identification of environmental Therapeutic Goals (TGs) has proven essential in providing useful guidance for planning and design (Cohen & Weisman 1991 ). Though age-specific environmental dimensions have been suggested by several researchers during 1980's to 1990's, none of them focused on dying patients and their experience in hospice care environment, so the need for categorizing dimensions for hospice environment is evident. The objective of this study is to identify the Therapeutic Goals of hospice environment focusing on patients' experience. This study employed a systematic literature review with an approach developed by Hawker and colleagues in 2002. This study had considered a wide-ranging literature search: 7 electronic databases search (PubMed, PsyciNFO, Social Science Citation Index, Science Citation Index, ProQuest Dissertations & Thesis, Avery, and Cochrane Library), reference list search, examination of literatures recommended by relevant experts, and Google search for books, reports, and guidelines. In total 48 literatures included; 39 full text articles, 2 books, 5 guidelines, and 2 reports. The data has extracted from these literatures onto a standard template (matrix) for comparison and analysis for coding and thematic development. The study identified eight themes as TGs which have direct influence on patients' experience of hospice care environment: provide continuity of self, provision of access to nature, provision of privacy, facilitate social interaction, maximize safety & security, provision of autonomy, regulate stimulation, and provision of spiritual care. These goals reflect two characteristics; each expresses a basic or derived major patient's need, and a potential environmental facilitator for the satisfaction of the need (Lawton et al. 2000). As the physical environment of hospice has significant impact on the patients' quality of life and the possibility of a good death (Cohen et al. 2001 ), these TGs have a positive effect on patients' lives

The purpose of this study was to investigate the oxidative stress response to a short duration bout of submaximal exercise in a cohort of healthy young adults. 15 apparently healthy college age males and females completed a modified Bruce-protocol treadmill test to 75–80% of their heart rate reserve. Blood samples collected immediately before (pre-exercise), immediately after, 30, 60 and 120 minutes post-exercise were assayed for total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide disumutase (SOD), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), and protein carbonyls (PC). SOD activity was significantly increased from pre-exercise levels at 30 minutes (77%), 60 minutes (33%), and 120 minutes (37%) post-exercise. TAC levels were also significantly increased from pre-exercise levels at 60 minutes (30%) and 120 minutes (33%) post-exercise. There were no significant changes in biomarkers for reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) mediated damage (TBARS and PC) across all post-exercise time points. In a cohort of healthy young adults, a short duration bout of submaximal aerobic exercise elicited increases in antioxidant activity/concentration, but did not evoke changes in oxidative stress-induced damage. These results may suggest that: (1) short duration bouts of submaximal aerobic exercise are sufficient to induce RONS generation; and (2) the antioxidant defense system is capable of protecting against enhanced RONS production induced by a short duration, submaximal exercise bout in healthy young adults

Citation: Adee, E., Hansel, F. D., Diaz, D. A. R., & Janssen, K. (2016). Corn Response as Affected by Planting Distance from the Center of Strip-Till Fertilized Rows. Frontiers in Plant Science, 7, 9. doi:10.3389/fpfs.2016.01232Strip-till has been used at a large scale in east central Kansas as an alternative to earlier planting dates under a no-till system. To determine the effects of planting corn (Zea mays) under previously established strip-tilled fertilized rows, experiments were conducted on an Osage silty clay loam soil in 2006 and 2008 and on a Woodson silt loam soil in 2009, 2010, and 2011 using three different planting distances from the strip-tilled fertilized rows (0, 10, 20, and 38 cm) with a strip-till operation performed between 1 and 73 days before planting. The depth of the strip-till fertilizer application was 13-15 cm below the soil surface. Corn that was planted 10 cm from the fertilized row showed greater early season growth, higher plant population, and grain yield. Planting 20 and 38 cm from the center of the fertilized rows showed none of the benefits that are typically associated with strip-tillage system. Enough time should be allowed between the strip-till operation and planting to reach satisfactory soil conditions (e.g., moist and firm seedbed). Our results suggest that the best location for planting strip-tilled fertilized corn vary depending on soil and climatic conditions as well as the time between fertilizer application with the strip-till operation and planting. With fewer number of days, planting directly on the center of fertilized strip-till resulted in decreased plant population and lower grain yield. However, the greatest yield benefit across different planting conditions was attained when planting within 10 cm of the strip

Neighborhood Integration and Connectivity Predict Cognitive Performance and Decline

Objective: Neighborhood characteristics may be important for promoting walking, but little research has focused on older adults, especially those with cognitive impairment. We evaluated the role of neighborhood characteristics on cognitive function and decline over a 2-year period adjusting for measures of walking. Method: In a study of 64 older adults with and without mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD), we evaluated neighborhood integration and connectivity using geographical information systems data and space syntax analysis. In multiple regression analyses, we used these characteristics to predict 2-year declines in factor analytically derived cognitive scores (attention, verbal memory, mental status) adjusting for age, sex, education, and self-reported walking. Results: Neighborhood integration and connectivity predicted cognitive performance at baseline, and changes in cognitive performance over 2 years. The relationships between neighborhood characteristics and cognitive performance were not fully explained by self-reported walking. Discussion: Clearer definitions of specific neighborhood characteristics associated with walkability are needed to better understand the mechanisms by which neighborhoods may impact cognitive outcomes. These results have implications for measuring neighborhood characteristics, design and maintenance of living spaces, and interventions to increase walking among older adults. We offer suggestions for future research measuring neighborhood characteristics and cognitive function
